It’s been 22 days and Chhoti Nirbhaya is still lying in a hospital ward behind a privacy screen. The perpetrator of the crime has been arrested and produced in front of a court but it has not reduced her suffering.

“She is still defecating and urinating through the alternative way created by the doctors. And she doesn’t like it,” says her mother, not knowing what else to say about her health.

At Safdarjung Hospital, with the newly appointed media spokesperson enjoying a Karwa Chauth leave, it becomes impossible to get your hands on the medical report of the child.

Your child is being treated. Isn’t that enough for you? What would you do with the reports? That’s what doctors say when I try to get a report on her treatment status. Even if I get it, I wouldn’t be able to make any sense out of it.

The family needs financial support to ensure a better future for her. “We appeal for help so that we can educate her and give her a good life to compensate for what she has lost,” says her father, a wage labourer.
