I signed a contract with Meghna ji in 2016. We met a while ago and I felt really nice about the fact that a movie is finally being made. I am very happy!
Laxmi on ‘Chhapaak’ to The Quint

Meghna Gulzar has teamed up with Deepika Padukone to tell the story of acid attack survivor Laxmi. Vikrant Massey will be essaying the role of Laxmi’s partner, Alok Dixit.

A film creates a lot of awareness in a society. Meghnaji makes movies on very inspirational people. It is a matter of great happiness that she is going to talk about my story as well. People will actually understand what the life of a survivor is like. People will finally understand what happens after an acid attack. More acid attack survivors will speak out. Victim blaming will also end.
Laxmi to The Quint

In 2005 when Laxmi was just 15, a man attacked her and threw acid on her face, while she was on her way to her summer job. Laxmi recalls feeling like someone had burnt her alive.

When the PCR van arrived to take her to the hospital, Laxmi recalls looking down at her hands and watching her skin melt away. “I could see my skin peeling away the same way plastic does when it is put on fire,” recounts Laxmi.

The man had been stalking her for two years and she had refused his advances vociferously.

On 25 March, Deepika Padukone revealed her look as she begins shooting for the movie.

While talking about Padukone’s character earlier, Meghna Gulzar had shared that the audience will not see the actor in a glamorous avatar in Chhapaak and that she will be seen in a disfigured avatar.

“There is an uncanny similarity between the survivor and Deepika.”

The film is slated to release in January 2020.
