World No Tobacco Day is celebrated around the globe every year to encourage people to refrain from all forms of tobacco consumption and to create a global recall about the harmful effects of tobacco on one’s health.
This year, the focus is on ‘tobacco and lung health’. The World Health Organisation (WHO) hopes to raise awareness on two levels through this campaign:
- the negative impact that tobacco has on people’s lung health, from cancer to chronic respiratory disease,
- the fundamental role lungs play for the health and well-being of all people.
To spread awareness and encourage others to quit, people took to Twitter to share their stories of kicking the butt.
One wrote: “I don't really throw things I'd consider achievements out there, but I hit 25 days without a cigarette and haven't smoked 500 cigarettes which is pretty wild.” While another wrote “Still not smoking. I feel great. You will, too!”
