Red is the colour of passion and fierceness, and if it happens to be in your pants, ladies, it can lead to one of the two things – you’ll either run away from sex, or you’ll jump on to the unprotected sex bandwagon.
While you should reject both possibilities, it doesn’t mean you have to completely say no to sex while on your period. Don’t believe us? Even doctors advise you to go for it if you don’t feel any discomfort.
In fact, in some cases, period sex might just be a good idea.
Period Sex Can Alleviate Cramps
Period sex may help relieve cramps. Not only can sex act as a potential mood-lifter, it also involves muscular contractions and releases that could help with muscular cramping.
While cramps range from causing slight discomfort to extreme pain, one in every four women suffers from severe period cramps.
Worried about the mess it might leave behind? Throw in a towel or a bed sheet or simply try your moves in the bathroom.
Can Period Sex Be More Pleasurable?
By the third day of the period, estrogen and testosterone levels, low on the first day, begin to rise in the body. Additionally, progesterone, which brings down the libido, is also at the lowest during periods.
This is perhaps why some women feel more aroused around this time. So, if you’re feeling sexier during that time of the month, dear ladies, know that it’s natural.
If this wasn’t enough, increased blood flow and additional lubrication in the nether regions may also make orgasms more pleasurable than usual for some women. However, this argument is not backed scientifically, Dr Ranjana Sharma, Senior Consultant, Gynaecology, Apollo Hospital, tells FIT.
But, forget all that for a moment and just remember one thing, and this part you should repeat after me:
Do not forget protection.
Never Say No to Protection – Yes, Even While Menstruating
Sex while menstruation is perfectly safe for both partners, but it’s still important to be careful, says Dr Ranjana Sharma.
Sex during periods is not an absolute no-no, but it’s better to avoid because it may lead to infections. That’s why it’s important to use a condom in such a scenario.Dr Ranjana Sharma, Senior Consultant, Gynaecology, Apollo Hospital.
Spoiler alert: Sex can lead to a pregnancy even while you’re on your period, depending on the stage of the cycle.
“The chances of pregnancy on your period is negligible, but all vaginal bleeding is not periods. Periods mean that the lining of the uterine wall is shedding and the egg comes out in the middle of this cycle. You might get caught with the timing, when you are bleeding, but are not on your period, and think it’s safe to have sex when it’s actually not,” Dr Sharma told FIT.
Sperm can live inside the female body for about three days on an average. Hence, it’s possible for a woman to have sex towards the end of her bleeding, following which sperm can go to conception town four-five days later and catch the train to early ovulation.
Additionally, if you happen to chance upon dark red or brown clumps during or after sex, worry not. They’re simply older blood or cells of the uterine lining.
Of course, all bodies deal differently with stimuli and various conditions.
While it is indeed medically alright for women to have sex while on their period, this doesn’t mean that all women will necessarily enjoy it. So, listen to your body and do what makes you comfortable.
