World’s Alzheimer’s Day is observed to spread awareness about Alzheimer’s among people, to fight against the stigma related to Alzheimer’s, and to ask for better policies and health care system for the Alzheimer’s patients.

Up to 80 percent of the population in India, are not aware of the symptoms or the disease itself. Poor access to medical health facilities means nearly 90 percent of the patients suffering from Alzheimer’s are not under any proper medical treatment. Other factors include lack of financial support, fear of judgement and lack of family support.

Add to that, there is no cure for Alzheimer’s and dementia till date and research in this field has been lacking. The process of brain cells damage can only be slowed down with the help of a few drugs and health care programs.

Alzheimer's Day: History

Why is the disease known as “Alzheimer’s Dementia”?

It is named after scientist Dr Alois Alzheimer, who first noticed the symptoms related to reading, writing, memorising and unpredictable behaviour in a woman in the year 1906 and then tested her brain tissues.
