The original YouTube sensation, comedian and vlogger Lily Singh is taking a hiatus from posting on YouTube. Also known as Superwoman, Singh announced to fans that she's taking a break, specifically to focus on her mental health.
Why am I taking a break is because of my mental health. I am mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually exhausted. I have been doing YouTube for 8 years consecutively. For 8 years I have been doing it regularly and for a lot of those 8 years I have been doing it twice a week. It’s been a lot! I have enjoyed it, I have loved it, but it has been a lot.Lily Singh
While her fans will surely miss her, this isn’t the first time that working professionals have decided to take leaves to focus on their mental health.
In July 2017, a web developer, Madalyn Parker, sent an email to her colleagues letting them know she was taking two days off "to focus on [her] mental health."
When her boss saw the mail, he decided to respond. And it was his response that got her to share her exchange on social media.
Soon enough, the tweet had gone viral. Since she posted, it’s got nearly 40,000 likes, with Facebook’s Sheryl Sandberg also sharing the story.
And it had sparked a debate, with many questioning if offices really needed a separate leave policy.
And others had lauded her courage and praised the boss for his sensitive response.
Encouraged by the response, Madalyn’s boss wrote on an article on medium.com. He wrote:
It’s 2017. We are in a knowledge economy. Our jobs require us to execute at peak mental performance. When an athlete is injured they sit on the bench and recover. Let’s get rid of the idea that somehow the brain is different.Ben Congleton, CEO,Olark
