Kalia, one of the separated conjoined twins from Odisha's Kandhamal district, died while undergoing treatment at the SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack on Wednesday evening.

“Despite all our efforts, we could not save Kalia, who died due to septicemia at 9.10 p.m.”
Bhubanananda Maharana, SCB Medical’s emergency officer

Maharana said during past one week the health condition of Kalia deteriorated while a team of 11 doctors were supervising the health condition of the twins.
However, the health condition of Jaga, the other separated conjoined twin, is stated to be stable.

Jaga and Kalia -- who were born joined at the head in Milipada village of Kandhamal district -- were separated in October 2017, after a marathon surgery that lasted for over 11 hours at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi.

After two years at AIIMS, they were shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack in September 2019.

Additional Chief Secretary (Health) P.K. Mohapatra said the demise of separated conjoined twin Kalia is a big loss.
"Despite all efforts, he could not be saved. After completion of all formalities, the family will be handed over his body," he said.
