AIIMS celebrated its first annual research day on 26th March, 2019, where over a dozen research papers were presented by revered doctors and scientists. Four new methods to revolutionize medicine through research were also introduced.

This research mentions massive cuts in the time taken to do surgeries and generate diagnostic reports. It also mentions non-invasive methods of surgery through incorporation of technology and using yoga and meditation as a means of treatment in patients.

The research has helped in reducing the time taken to generate TB reports from weeks to minutes as well as enabled surgeons to save time during complex spinal surgeries. It has also been found that Yoga can be used to treat glaucoma patients along with use of 3-D technology to study the heart.

TB Reports in 30 minutes

It usually takes 2-8 weeks to generate a TB report. Owing to the research work done by AIIMS and the department of health sciences and technology, this time has been cut to only 30 minutes. This method checks for TB in the lungs and the neighboring membrane and also diagnoses TB impacting the brain.

Dr. Jaya Tyagi, an AIIMS researcher, has developed a test method named ICS for this purpose.

Saving Time in Complex Spinal Surgeries

The curvature in the spine due to scoliosis not only impacts your ability to walk but also influences your lungs and heart. Since the surgeries of the spine are extremely complex, carelessness can be fatal.

Dr. Bhavuk Garg, a specialist in orthopedic surgery at AIIMS, has used 3-D printing to prepare a model, which insures accurate placement of the screw during surgery. This method has led to 2-3-hour deduction in surgery time.

Yoga Can Be Used to Treat Glaucoma

According to research at AIIMS, regular yoga can help cure glaucoma. Intraocular pressure is one of the major aspects for evaluation of patients at risk of glaucoma. Reducing intraocular pressure is so far, the only method to help patients with glaucoma.

According to the research done by professors Reema Dada and Tanuj Dada at AIIMS, yoga can help reduce the pressure on the eye. It can also helps to regulate and control the secretion of the stress hormone.

3-D Glasses to Replace Heart Surgery

Before heart surgery, CT scans were used to observe the heart. But often, the images of the inside of the heart were unclear.

According Prof. Dr. Saurabh Gupta, a cardiologist, 3-D glasses worth only 70 Rupees can be used to see a 3-D image of the heart by simply connecting it to a special software. This method has helped save a 16-year old’s life by fixing the hole in her heart without surgery.
