The Hillary Clinton campaign took a hit last week when the FBI announced that it has a warrant to search the emails found on a laptop that belongs to Anthony Weiner, the estranged husband of Huma Abedin, Clinton’s longest-serving aide.

The FBI, which has been investigating illicit text messages allegedly sent from Weiner to a 15-year-old girl in North Carolina, found the Clinton emails on a device related to that investigation.

Here’s an explainer on the complicated relationship, both personal and political, between Weiner, Abedin and Clinton.

Abedin announced her separation from Weiner in August after a sex scandal similar to an earlier incident that led him to resign from the US Congress came to light.

The Clinton email controversy initially started in March 2015 with a New York Times report that Clinton had used a personal email account based on a private server as Secretary of State.

Clinton’s staff went through tens of thousands of emails, weeding out those they thought needed to be turned over to the State Department, deeming the rest ‘personal’.

A few days later, Clinton told reporters that she used the server because she felt it was "convenient."

By July 2015, the Department of Justice got involved, to assess whether any classified information had been put in jeopardy. However, in July this year, FBI director his testimony under oath in July that the Clinton investigation was complete and there would be no charge.
