As summer temperatures rise year after year, so do our AC bills. For those who can afford it, it’s not a problem. But that is never an option for the poor.

Ashish Paul from Bangladesh devised a very clever cooling system that doesn’t require any electricity. In fact, it can be constructed with the most common waste-item –plastic bottles.

According to Inhabitat, the smart air cooler called Eco Cooler has a simple technique and it doesn’t even need any expertise to construct it.

A board is cut to fit the required vent. The board is then drilled with grids of holes, big enough to fit bottle necks of plastic bottles which are cut at the base. The board is then mounted onto the vent such that the funnel shaped neck faces the inside of a house, while the broader base faces outside.

As hot air passes through, the narrow bottle neck compresses and cools the air.

When Ashish Paul decided to spread the wisdom to help as many people as he can, multinational advertising firm Grey Group and volunteers from Grameen Intel Social Business stepped up to give him a helping hand.

Other than being able to function without electricity, it is also not hazardous to the environment.

The odourless, tasteless Freon gas which is used as a coolant in air conditioning can lead to health issues like breathing problems, organ damage and even sudden death (if inhaled).

In other cases when CFCs are used instead of Freon, it reacts with the ozone gas in the atmosphere leaving us vulnerable to the harmful ultraviolet radiations of the sun.

Given the severe environmental crisis the world is facing, Eco Cool is just the environment friendly innovation that we need.
