‘Udta Punjab’ vs ‘High Society’: Is the Film Just a Blatant Copy?

Did Ben Elton’s novel High Society get ripped off as Udta Punjab? Have the storyline and major plot points of the novel been lifted and used in the controversial film?

A detailed comparison of the book and the film by thereel.scroll.in shows that the similarities between Elton’s dark novel and Abhishek Chaubey’s film are too many to be a mere coincidence. Not only are the three main characters in the book and film almost identical, there are also about six similarities in the storyline of High Society and Udta Punjab.

While Udta Punjab’s writer Sudip Sharma says that he did read High Society “a long time back”, he also states that he doesn’t remember most of it.
