The trailer of Akshay Kumar’s Jolly LLB 2 doesn’t promise anything unusual or out-of-the-box, but it wasn’t expected to either. The film follows the classic David vs Goliath storyline, wherein a small time lawyer takes on the corrupt and powerful system backed by (I am guessing) dirty cops + wily politicians, and ends up winning.
However, going by the trailer, here are some elements that make the film worth looking out for:
Akshay Kumar Is On Point
What works in the trailer is firstly - Akshay Kumar, who convincingly looks like a regular pan-chewing lawyer next door from Lucknow. With the line, “Beta, jo vakil paise vapis kar de na, woh vakil nahi hota...”, Akshay’s desperate, greasy, small-time lawyer act hits home instantly.
Getting the Right Look Legally
Most Bollywood films don’t get the look of a local court right, thankfully - Jolly LLB 2 does. No, courts don’t look like the sanitised cardboard set pieces that are usually put up at Filmistan in most mainstream films. This cramped room with dreary walls, exposed wiring, metal Godrej almirahs, stacks of files and overhead tubelights makes the atmosphere of this court in Lucknow absolutely believable.
The production designer’s attention to detail makes Jolly LLB 2’s small world come alive and allows the viewer to get drawn into it.
These Actors Are a Great Support
The film has a terrific set of supporting actors - Saurabh Shukla is back as Justice Tripathi, with the awesome Annu Kapoor and Kumud Mishra adding weight to the proceedings. Who wouldn’t want to watch these guys in action?
Let’s Talk About the Original One
The original Jolly LLB featuring Arshad Warsi had great potential which went untapped. Warsi is a seasoned actor and did a terrific job of bringing Jagdish Tyagi to life but the writing was a big let down. In my opinion, if the first film were better scripted as a scathing satire on the judicial system in India, it could have got the acclaim that some of Rajkumar Hirani’s films such as 3 Idiots and PK received. Instead, the makers were just content in making a regular film out of it.
Hopefully, Fox Star India and Subhash Kapoor will be more ambitious with the sequel.
