This year the Hindi film industry lost two of its icons - Sridevi, in February 2018 and Shashi Kapoor in December 2017. The Academy honoured them in their ‘In Memoriam’ segment. This annual mash-up of cinema’s recently deceased is generally tinted in sepia and accompanied by music.
This year, the song for the segment was performed by Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder - ‘I got a room at the top of the world tonight.' It payed homage to Indian stars Sridevi and Shashi Kapoor in a lump-in-the-throat moment for many Indian audiences.
The biggest Hollywood night - 90th Academy Awards that marks the grand finale of the awards season kicked off in LA with Jimmy Kimmel as the host, for the second time in a row.
Bollywood personalities such as Vidya Balan and Varun Dhawan today thanked the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science for paying tributes to Indian stars, Shashi Kapoor and Sridevi in the In Memoriam segment at the 2018 Oscars ceremony.
Rishi Kapoor, nephew of the legendary actor wrote on Twitter:
Oscars. Thank you for remembering Shashi Kapoor and Sridevi. Thrilled to see the name Raj Kapoor as the executive producer of the show. We are on the threshold of world cinema!
He also added that Indians are taking the centre-stage in international cinema and posted a video clip of the ceremony's closing credits which showed his father actor-filmmaker Raj Kapoor's namesake as a co-producer.
