Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri raked in heaps of accolades at the 24th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards on Sunday, winning the best ensemble (the SAG equivalent of a best-picture category), best actress and best supporting actor prizes (Frances McDormand and Sam Rockwell respectively). In strides that could be predictive of Oscar wins, favourites from the Golden Globes seem to have cemented their positions.
Gary Oldman bagged the laurel of lead male actor for Darkest Hour, while I, Tonya star Allison Janney earned the title of outstanding female actor in a supporting role.
The Good Place actor Kristen Bell, the first-ever host of the Screen Actors Guild Awards kicked off the event on Sunday evening by taking a dig at the First Lady Melania Trump. Her opening speech addressed the Time's Up and #MeToo movements against systemic sexual abuse in Hollywood.
“There has never been a host for this awards show before. First time. First person. First lady. I honestly never thought I would grow up to be the first lady, but you know what, I kind of like it. I think my first initiative as first lady will be cyberbullying because I have yet to see any progress on that problem quite yet.”Kristen Bell
“Truth is power and women are stepping into their power. Make no mistake, this is not a moment in time, this is a movement.”SAG-AFTRA president Gabrielle Carteris
Nicole Kidman teared up as she accepted her first Screen Actors Guild Award on Sunday for her role in HBO's Big Little Lies. The flu didn’t deter her from making an unforgettable speech celebrating actresses over 40. In her speech, Kidman showered praise on her fellow nominees -- Susan Sarandon, Jessica Lange, Reese Witherspoon, and Laura Dern.
“I want to thank you all for your trailblazing performances you’ve given over your career and how wonderful it is that our careers can go beyond 40 years old because 20 years ago, we were pretty washed up by this stage in our lives. We’ve proven — and these actresses and so many more have proven — we are potent and powerful and viable. I just beg that the industry stays behind us because our stories are finally being told. It’s only the beginning.”Nicole Kidman
The Times Up pins were conspicuous by their limited appearance at the event. Reese Witherspoon who helped launch the movement was not seen wearing the pin. After the blackout at the Golden Globes, stars made it a point to show up in their vibrant finery at the event.
As Aziz Ansari who was nominated for the category of Best Actor in a Comedy Series didn’t turn up at the event following anonymous allegations of sexual coercion on a date (reported by Babe) and James Franco looked painfully awkward during the course of the evening, Marisa Tomei celebrated the "silence breakers". She honoured actress Rosanna Arquette, who accused producer Harvey Weinstein of sexual harassment.
Ansari lost to William H Macy and Franco also lost to Gary Oldman in the Male Actor In A Leading Role category.
Ansari was the only nominee to meet with a lack of applause.
These awards are hailed as formidable indicators of the wins and snubs to follow at the Oscars.
