Netflix has put an end to its five-year-long partnership with Marvel after the streaming service portal cancelled the last of the remaining Marvel shows – ‘Jessica Jones’ and ‘The Punisher’ – on Monday, according to The Verge.

Netflix issued a statement that said, “We are grateful to Marvel for five years of our fruitful partnership and thank the passionate fans who have followed these series from the beginning,” as quoted by the CNBC.

Following is the statement from Netflix:

“Marvel’s The Punisher will not return for a third season on Netflix. Showrunner Steve Lightfoot, the terrific crew, and exceptional cast including star Jon Bernthal, delivered an acclaimed and compelling series for fans, and we are proud to showcase their work on Netflix for years to come. In addition, in reviewing our Marvel programming, we have decided that the upcoming third season will also be the final season for Marvel’s Jessica Jones. We are grateful to showrunner Melissa Rosenberg, star Krysten Ritter and the entire cast and crew, for three incredible seasons of this groundbreaking series, which was recognized by the Peabody Awards among many others. We are grateful to Marvel for five years of our fruitful partnership and thank the passionate fans who have followed these series from the beginning.”

This move comes as Disney plans to debut its own streaming media service Disney + in the latter half of this year.

Given the recent trends of Marvel shows being cancelled, this didn't come as a surprise to many.

Daredevil was cancelled in November 2018, ‘Iron Fist’ was cancelled in October 2018, ‘Luke Cage’ was also cancelled last October and ‘The Defenders’ only ran for one season.

However, the previous seasons for both the shows will remain on Netflix for viewers. Since Netflix co-owns these six Marvel titles, there is a chance of these superheroes returning on different streaming platforms, but with different actors or stories.
