Bareilly Ki Barfi, starring Kriti Sanon, Ayushmann Khurrana and Rajkummar Rao, hits the theatres today (18 August). A love triangle between Bitti, Chirag Dubey and Pritam Vidrohi, the Ashwini Iyer Tiwari small-town film is reportedly an official adaptation of the French book Ingredients of Love.

And does it live up to its promise? According to a review by Gulf News, it does. While the first half is nice but predictable, “the scenes after the interval are delightful” - surprise, surprise! And of course, it’s Rajkummar Rao who steals the show.

Actor Ayushmann Khurrana and Kriti Sanon are his perfect foil, but they don’t hold a candle next to Rao’s impeccable comic timing and his hilarious two-sided personality switch... While it takes time for Bareilly Ki Barfi to warm up to you, the crackling second half and the arrival of Rao signals for good things to come.

According to the review by Khaleej Times, the film leaves you wanting more, but Rao makes it worth the trip to the theatre.

Overall, ‘Bareilly Ki Barfi’ is a light-hearted film that leaves one asking for more... As expected, Rao outshines the other lead characters, although Khurrana tries to engage us, playing the lovelorn character - however, the former steals the show as he switches from being a shy, simpleton saree salesman to a character gone ‘rogue’.

Bareilly Ki Barfi revolves around real people and that’s what makes it endearing, according to the review by Times of India.

BKB is a hooray moment for Hindi cinema. This romcom set in the North Indian town of Bareilly, breaks the shackles of Bollywood’s continued dependence on cardboard cuts and instead introduces you to real people, whose charms are infectious... Every time you guffaw at the antics of the lead and supporting cast, you are reminded that there is so much humour in our daily routine which we have forgotten to stop and savour.

The film is just the “desi dessert” you were waiting for, says a Firstpost review.

Overall, Bareilly Ki Barfi is a character-driven as all the characters are pivotal to the plot and backed by substantial writing. The three lead actors drive most of the narrative - Ayushmann’s endearing expressions, Kriti’s livewire presence and Rajkummar’s unpredictable dialogue delivery provide the perfect ingredients for a sweet rom com that has its share of masala. That masala surprisingly adds to the overall taste.
