Inspired by real life events, Airlift is based on the massive evacuation of nearly 1,70,000 Indians stranded in war-ravaged Kuwait in 1990. Piloted by Akshay Kumar, who puts up a stunning performance, it is an extremely well crafted and intelligently made film. The first half is buoyant with some gritty scenes and lots of delectably intense and engaging performances. Post interval, sadly, while the tension dips and the climax disappoints, it’s the patriotic fervour and some remarkable performances by the supporting cast which ensure that Airlift is goddamned hard to tear oneself away from.
