Karan Johar announced recently through his upcoming autobiography An Unsuitable Boy how his 25-year-old friendship with Kajol doesn't exist any more. Karan makes it clear that he had no direct conflict with Kajol, but she chose to support her husband Ajay Devgn when he alleged that Johar had bribed KRK to give negative reviews about Shivaay. And it’s evident how deeply hurt Karan is.

In an industry where friendships are mostly seen as a matter of convenience and profit, KJo and Kajol stood out with their genuine warmth and love for each other. No where did it come out more than in 2012 on Rendezvous with Simi Garewal, where their honest friendship was for all to see. Indeed, it makes this fallout seem all the more sadder.

Here’s looking back at how the duo showed their love and respect for each other.
I told Karan, you have to bring your best-est female friend on the show and it didn’t even take him a moment to answer, ‘well then that’s Kajol’.Simi Garewal
I am pretty instinctive... I took him as my friend almost instantly.Kajol
Karan Johar also shared on the show how Kajol was ready to give up a film with Mani Ratnam - a director she adored - because she had committed to the dates for Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (KKHH), his debut directorial. “For her, it was no big deal and that made a lot of difference to me,” Karan said looking back on it as the pivotal moment that defined their friendship.
I have always been very protective about him. He’s my mild, sweet-mannered friend. With Adi and others, I am always like, ‘don’t tease Karan’. He’s my sweety.Kajol
When quizzed about fights, Karan said they had one fight in six years on the sets of KKHH. Kajol was unwell and in a bad mood and yelled at him in front of everyone, and then apologised for 10 minutes.
And I had to apologise for her apologising to me. Kajol’s hug has so much warmth, it can keep you warm for the whole year.Karan Johar
Incidentally, KJo during the interview also refers to how demure and un-Kajolish Kajol becomes whenever she is talking to husband Ajay Devgn. Had the seed of difference been already planted then?
