On a webisode of Ishq FM’s Calling Karan, Johar displays his ability to be compassionate without tiptoeing around the truth. A gay caller on the show seeks love guru Johar’s advice on his predicament of being gay and living a lie every single day of his life due to being married out of parental pressure.

At the onset, Johar tells the caller to not be ashamed or feel lesser on account of his sexual orientation. Johar reassures the caller that acknowledging his orientation is a bold and the right thing to do.

“It’s your prerogative. It’s your preference. No one can take that away from you. We live in a traditional, conservative society with parents and grandparents who may not understand the concept of homosexuality. But it is not fair to drag another life into this. Your wife does not need to go through this. In her day-to-day life, she must be feeling maybe, less attractive and insecure. While your are entitled to your orientation, you are not entitled to ruin somebody else’s life. I think she deserves the truth. You have to face the music and post that you will feel liberated.”

Karan Johar urges the caller to be honest with her and to come out to her, while accepting his mistake and apologising. He eggs him on to give her an explanation so that she does not feel like that marriage fell apart because of a shortcoming that she failed to put her finger on.

He even recommends his Bombay Talkies short film to the caller.

Karan Johar had recently addressed the curiosity around his own sexual orientation at Sahitya Aaj Tak.

“I have never expressed my sexual orientation in those many words. I have insinuated a lot and have said what I wanted to say in my book. I will never say that I am embarrassed or ashamed to say it. I am very proud of who I am and who I will always be”.
