Rarely does a celebrity try an unconventional trick at the Cannes film festival, one of the most stylish events on the fashion calendar. But, Hollywood actress Julia Roberts never cared much about convention or rules. Known for her brave choices, the Money Monster actress walked the red carpet at the 69th prestigious film festival bare foot on Thursday, starting a media storm.
The lack of footwear violates the strict (but unwritten) dress code, but after last year’s ‘Flatgate’ controversy, it’s not a surprise that celebrities are rebelling against the rules.
Roberts donned a vintage-inspired black gown. Featuring a plunging neckline and off-the-shoulder cap sleeves, the gown was perfect for the actress. She paired her dress with an emerald pendant on a diamond chain and a matching ring.
While climbing up the stairs, Roberts hiked up her dress to reveal her feet bereft of footwear. Meanwhile, George Clooney and his wife, Amal Clooney, appeared by her side, wearing shoes.
A grinning Julia posed for the shutterbugs and the camera persons had a field day seeing her blatant disregard for the strict rules set by the festival. A French magazine L’Express applauded Roberts’ gambit and called it a “veritable act of militant feminism.”
It is not the first time that the Pretty Woman star has pulled off something so unconventional like this. She went barefoot at her wedding to singer-actor Lyle Lovett in 1993.
