‘Virus’ Trailer: A Chilling Tale of Kerala’s Deadly Nipah Outbreak

The trailer for Malayalam director and actor Aashiq Abu’s latest film Virus is out. The movie is a chilling retelling of the events surrounding the outbreak of the deadly Nipah virus that wreaked havoc across Kerala in 2018. The trailer portrays the efforts that doctors took to contain and fight the virus. It also offers a glimpse into the helpless plight of the families of those who have been affected with the disease for which there is no known cure.

The Nipah virus is an infectious disease that is transmitted from animals to humans. Symptoms include high fever, respiratory issues and inflammation of the brain that can lead to disorientation or a coma.

According to a report by Al Jazeera, at least 17 people died as a result of an outbreak of the Nipah virus in Kerala in May 2018, among those a young nurse who was treating patients affected by the disease. The outbreak originated in the Kozhikode and Mallapuram districts and over 2,000 people from the state were placed under quarantine. This was the third Nipah outbreak was recorded in India after 2001 and 2007. Fruit bats were found to be the source of the virus, which was declared to have been contained by mid-June.

Virus has been directed by Aashiq Abu and stars Kunchacko Boban, Tovino Thomas, Indrajith Sukumaran, Asif Ali and Soubin Shahir. The film releases on 7 June.
