Legendary Bengali filmmaker Mrinal Sen has passed away of age-related issues on Sunday 30 December at 10:30 am. He was 95 years old and is survived by his son Kunal.
Born on May 14, 1932, Mrinal was a Padma Bhushan and Dada Saheb Phalke awardee. He was known for leading a new wave of parallel cinema in India with films like Ek Din Achanak, Padatik and Mrigayaa. Mrinal made his directorial debut with Raat Bhore in 1955.
In the seventies he established himself with films that were socially relevant and critical of the establishment and contemporary society. Some of his important works of this era were Bhuvan Shome (1969), Oka Oori Katha (1977) and Mrigayaa (1976) which marked the debut of Bollywood star Mithun Chakraborty.
In 1986 he made Genesis which featured Om Puri, Shabana Azmi and Naseeruddin Shah. Some of his later acclaimed works are Ek Din Pratidin (1979), Kharij (1982), Khandhar (1983) and Ek Din Achanak (1989)
Mrinal Sen was a recipient of 12 international film awards and also a member of the Indian People’s Theatre Association.
