The first teaser trailer of Star Trek: Picard, an upcoming series produced for the American broadcasting company CBS, has hit the internet. The series is expected to be released worldwide late 2019 on Amazon Prime Video.
Jean Luc Picard, formerly the captain of the USS Enterprise (the starship central to the original Star Trek series), is expected to be the central character in the show. The character, played by Sir Patrick Stewart, last appeared in Star Trek Nemesis (2002).
The trailer is just over a minute long but there are some significant takeaways.
It appears that Picard was, at some point, promoted from captain to admiral and then resigned from the Starfleet for unspecified reasons. In the trailer he has returned to France and is working at his family vineyard. A crate of the fictional produce “Chateau Picard” appears on screen.
The trailer is voiced-over by a woman. “Fifteen years ago, today, you led us out of the darkness. You commanded the greatest rescue armada in history. Then, the unimaginable. Tell us, why did you leave Starfleet, admiral?” she asks.
The woman’s identity and the event she refers to, are both unknown. The events of this series will take place 20 years after Nemesis.
The series Star Trek: Discovery is currently ongoing. It is a prequel to the original series and will likely have very little connection with Picard.
