In the run up to the release of season 2 of Sacred Games, Netflix has released a teaser featuring Saif Ali Khan as his character Sartaj Singh. The 30-second clip sees Sartaj bandaging his hand after having had his thumb cut off by Malcolm Murad, one of the show’s villains, played by Luke Kenny.

He grapples with memories of the times he failed to save his acquaintances, who ended up dead. A voiceover says, “We have both failed. You didn’t do your duty. Neither did I,” and we see flashes of RAW officer Anjali Mathur (Radhika Apte) and Sartaj’s colleague and friend Constable Katekar. Sartaj then turns to the camera and asks, “Why must we sacrifice so much? And what do we do when there’s nothing left to sacrifice?”

Season one of Sacred Games, which is the web adaptation of Vikram Chandra’s eponymous novel, saw two intersecting storylines. The first is a flashback detailing the rise of gangster Ganesh Gaitonde (played by Nawazuddin Siddiqui), who is already dead at the start of the season. Just before shooting himself, he makes a mysterious call to police officer Sartaj Singh, embroiling him in a mystery that he must solve in 25 days or risk losing Mumbai to the treat of total annihilation. In case you need a refresher, here’s a recap from Gaitonde himself.

Season two sees Ganesh Gaitonde re-establish himself as kingpin somewhere far from Mumbai. Meanwhile, Sartaj continues his quest to save the city from destruction, which leads to him joining a cult lead by Pankaj Tripathi’s Guruji, who was introduced as Gaitonde’s teesra baap (third father) in the first season. The Pankaj Tripathi will have a bigger role to play in the story in season 2, and will be joined by new cast members Kalki Koechlin and Ranbir Shorey. Anurag Kashyap returns as director for Nawazuddin’s portions and Neeraj Ghaywan has replaced Vikramaditya Motwane as director for Saif’s parts.

Season 2 of Sacred Games streams on Netflix from 15 August.
