On Wednesday, streaming giant Netflix announced that it would soon be rolling out a low-budget mobile-only subscription plan for its Indian users. The plan will be priced lower than its other subscription plans, which are much higher than that of other streaming platforms like Amazon and Hotstar.

The announcement was made along with the company’s quarterly results which showed that Netflix had additional subscribers were lower than the expected figure.

This might help Netflix compete with its rivals in the market - Amazon and Hotstar.

In March, the platform had said that it was testing Rs 250/per month subscription plan exclusively for mobile users only. This decision was made based on the fact that India has one of the cheapest data plans in the world.

Moreover, this might help Netflix compete with its rivals in the market - Amazon and Hotstar. Both of which have subscription plans that cost much lower.

“We believe this plan ... will be an effective way to introduce a larger number of people in India to Netflix and to further expand our business in a market where Pay TV ARPU is low,” said Netflix.

‘Betaal’ will be co-produced by Gaurav Verma, Shah Rukh’s Red Chillies Entertainment and Netflix.

Netflix currently has three different subscription plans at Rs 500, 650 and 800. Depending on video quality and number of devices.

Recently, Netflix announced 5 new original shows: Bombay Begums, Mai, Betaal, Messy, and Masaba Masaba. Mai will be produced by Anushka Sharma & Karnesh Sharma's Clean Slate Films. Betaal will be co-produced by Gaurav Verma, Shah Rukh’s Red Chillies Entertainment and Netflix.
