On the sets of his upcoming Netflix series Bard of Blood, Emraan Hashmi got candid about doing his first web series, the perception that he doesn’t watch films and more. Here are some excerpts:
So you’re playing an agent in the series. What was the preparation that went into playing this part? Did you actually go out there and meet agents?
Well, didn’t really go and meet agents but yeah, there was a lot of physical prep for the character because there are very intense action scenes in this, things from different guns, just being true to that.
I read the book a long time back. It was very important for me to read it before it was adapted into the screenplay. That gave me a sense of the world, how Kabir Anand was initially intended to be and of course, some things were tweaked when we adapted the screenplay for the Netflix show. And yeah, I’ve just been on that journey since the past four years, since the time I had launched the book in Mumbai. For me, it’s just learn the lines, land up on set, trial and error.
So there’s really no...
Process? No, there is. I believe every scene, one thing is of course, the lines and the other is the subtext in the scenes, what each scene is trying to tell, and just getting into the headspace of the character and just that.
This guy is also someone who has hung up his boots and is teaching, is a professor and then he goes back to being an agent. As an actor do you find that you are gravitating towards things that make you uncomfortable? And was that one of those things, did this make you uncomfortable?
Of course, I think it’s very important for the material to keep you at the edge of your seat, to keep you on your toes. And this is a new experience for me, being a show that has multiple episodes, being a Netflix show, away from my comfort zone in films was a challenge, was an unexplored zone for me. It’s always a plus for an actor – not that films are completely the comfort zone because you’re always playing different characters in every film – so I strive for that in films and this was a completely new experience, unexplored.
