Akshay Kumar starrer Rustom was largely inspired from the well-known 1959 case of KM Nanavati v. State of Maharashtra that was marked by a landmark verdict and unprecedented media coverage. Now Angad Bedi is set to step into the shoes of lawyer Karl Khandalvala in the 10-part ALTBalaji series based on the sensational criminal case - The Verdict – State Vs Nanavati.
On April 27, 1959, Naval officer Kawas Manekshaw Nanavati shot his wife’s lover Prem Ahuja with his service revolver. Nanavati, accused under section 302, was held not guilty by the session court. The verdict later was dismissed by the Bombay High Court. Nanavati was later convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment under Section 302 of the IPC.
“After Inside Edge, I was keen to do a show only if it ups the ante in terms of uniqueness of storyline. I heard the concept of this show, it just blew my mind! Powerful and exceptional roles like these are what actor dreams are made off. You know, I have always believed that with Ekta one can expect the unexpected, and this is one of those. You would identify certain genres with her but with ALTBalaji she will break every stereotype that ever existed.”Angad Bedi
"The story at its core is so powerful, and who wouldn’t take up the opportunity to play Karl Khandalawala, the experienced top running criminal lawyer. It’s an interesting role and I have already started preparing for it. I am so glad to have got this opportunity to work with Shashant Shah who is going to direct this show," Bedi added.
The courtroom drama will be based on public records, newspaper articles of the time, interviews and a host of theatre veterans are set to play pivotal roles.
