It’s never easy to predict Oscar winners even though it all boils down to the two or three front-runners at the end of the awards season. But favourites keep changing till the last day, adding to the confusion! I am sticking my neck out and predicting the Academy Awards 2016 winners for The Quint. Take a look at this list before you place your bets.
(Predicted Winners in Bold)
Best Picture
The Big Short
Bridge of Spies
Brooklyn
Mad Max: Fury Road
The Martian
The Revenant
Room
Spotlight
Spotlight may be a better drama but it does seem like the Academy favours survival tales a lot more. There is no doubt that the entire team of The Revenant has gone all out to make this film, from shooting in extreme conditions and also creating scenes which involve physically exhausting acting. The Revenant has all the ingredients that are needed to win an Oscar. But in case you haven’t already, do watch Mad Max: Fury Road!
Best Director
Adam McKay – The Big Short
George Miller – Mad Max: Fury Road
Alejandro G Iñárritu – The Revenant
Lenny
Abrahamson – Room
Tom
McCarthy – Spotlight
Mexican filmmaker Alejandro G. Iñárritu won the Best Director award for Birdman last year and this year once again he is close to winning the trophy for Best Director for The Revenant. He won the top prize at the Directors Guild of America Awards for The Revenant in Los Angeles, the film is the front runner in the Best Film category too.
Best Actor
Bryan Cranston – Trumbo
Matt Damon – The Martian
Leonardo DiCaprio –
The Revenant
Michael Fassbender – Steve Jobs
Eddie Redmayne – The Danish Girl
The 41-year-old actor is nominated for the sixth time and looks like this is going to be his year. Leonardo DiCaprio’s has gone all out for his absolutely brilliant performance in The Revenant, which is exhausting to just even watch. You can put all your money on Leo this year!
Best Actress
Cate Blanchett – Carol
Brie Larson – Room
Jennifer Lawrence – Joy
Charlotte Rampling – 45 Years
Saoirse Ronan – Brooklyn
Brie Larson brought a lot of depth in her performance in Room. She plays a mother struggling to bring up her child within the four walls of a room. The unconditional love between a mother and child makes Room an emotional journey and Brie Larson carries the film through.
Best Supporting Actor
Christian Bale – The Big Short
Tom Hardy – The Revenant
Mark Ruffalo – Spotlight
Mark Rylance – Bridge of Spies
Sylvester Stallone –
Creed
Sylvester Stallone delivered a touching performance in Creed, directed by Ryan Coogler. It’s a spin-off of Stallone’s Rocky series. He has been collecting a slew of prizes for Creed and looks like Oscars is his next stop.
Best Supporting Actress
Jennifer Jason Leigh – The Hateful Eight
Rooney Mara – Carol
Rachel McAdams – Spotlight
Alicia Vikander – The
Danish Girl
Kate Winslet – Steve Jobs
This remarkable love story inspired by the lives of artists Lili Elbe and Gerda Wegener is made in the most delicate and elegant way. Alicia Vikander delivers a fabulous and a touching performance, which may just win her the golden trophy. Another performance in this category that comes close is Kate Winslet’s in the Steve Jobs biopic.
