Deepika has opened up about her battle against depression on many occasions. She feels so strongly about the disorder that Padukone even went on start the Live Love Laugh Foundation. She has been articulate about the attitudes to depression and has not shied away from breaking down publicly. Her disarming frankness has helped in creating awareness around mental health and destigmatizing it.
She has also been constantly busting the myth that depression is the malaise of the rich and successful.
So, when Salman Khan casually referred to depression as a ‘luxury’, Deepika didn’t fail to address his uninformed statement.
“I see a lot of people getting depressed and emotional, but I can’t afford that luxury of being depressed or sad or emotional because no matter what I am going through, it works against me.”Salman Khan at an event
Though the Padmaavat star didn’t directly take a jibe at him, she spoke about it an event without taking names. It seems like her quote was meant for Salman Khan.
“Depression is sometimes perceived as luxury... (But) It is important to break that myth. When we were talking about more celebrities coming out and speaking and when we were talking about stigma, there is a lot of miscommunication that depression happens to people who are successful. I want to clarify that it can happen to anybody from any field.”
More power to you Deepika!
