JNU Students Union President Aishe Ghosh, on Bollywood actress Deepika Padukone joining the protest against the attack on JNU students on Sunday, 5 January, said that when one is in a position, they should speak up.

Former JNUSU President Kanhaiya Kumar, on his twitter, while thanking Deepika for her support, said, “you might be abused and trolled today, but history will remember your courage and for standing by the idea of India.”

Bollywood actor Deepika Padukone on Tuesday, 7 January joined a protest rally against the attack on students and teachers of JNU by masked miscreants, alleged to be members of the BJP affiliated students organisation ABVP.

Visuals from the protest show Deepika standing at the gathering, near the podium, from where former JNUSU president Kanhaiya Kumar, along with Aishe Ghosh, was chanting slogans. Later, she also met with and greeted Ghosh.

Earlier, during a promotional event for Chhapaak, Deepika Padukone was also asked about her opinion on the incident. The actor replied, “I am proud to see that we are not scared to express ourselves. The fact that we are considering this and speaking about it, irrespective of the point of view we have, is a great thing to witness.”

On Sunday, 5 January, a mob of masked miscreants stormed the JNU campus in south Delhi and attacked students and teachers, vandalising hostels and damaging college property with sticks, stones and iron rods. They also attacked a women's hostel.
