Woah! A lot of people were offended by a lot of things this year. Here are the biggest controversies of 2017.
The Padmavati Row
Abuses, threats and protests were made against Sanjay Leela Bhansali's film, based on a Rajput queen, who we really aren't sure even existed.
All you sane people out there, feel free to roll your eyes like Bhansali's favourite heroine.
The controversy turned political and peaked with threats to cut off Deepika Padukone's nose, and behead the filmmaker. All this over a regular Bollywood movie, which has been filmed and televised before?
We agree with Deepika's sentiments here.
Hrithik-Kangana Controversy
Hrithik sent Kangana a notice after she allegedly called him a...
While Kangana claimed that Hrithik proposed to her, Hrithik finally spoke out and declared that he has never even met Kangana alone.
While we don’t know what’s what in this controversy, this might be the right time to move on from this discussion.
The Nepotism Debate
Kangana also declared that Karan Johar was the flag-bearer of nepotism in Bollywood.
And KJo retorted by suggesting that Kangana could ‘leave the industry if it’s that bad.’ Well she is already too busy dealing with one man. Usko aur koi kaam nahi hai kya?
Like she says “I am definitely not going anywhere, Mr Johar”.
Karan Johar in his head be like...
Mallika Dua Vs Akshay Kumar
Akshay told Mallika Dua “Tum bell bajao, maine tumhe bajata hoon.” Lekin baji kiski?
Seriously Akshay, we also want to know: What Were You Thinking?
Mrs Funny Bones initially jumped in to support her hubby but later backtracked after being slammed for it.
Someone was done making headlines for the wrong reasons.
Over? You Wish!
Pahlaj Nihalani Making Headlines
With a lot of films mutilated over sex and sexuality, it was clear that the former CBFC (Central Board of Film Certification) chief had a problem with...
When Mr Sanskari Nihalani asked the makers of Shah Rukh Khan starrer, Jab Harry Met Sejal to get one lakh votes in support of the word ‘intercourse’, we all agreed with SRK's reaction.
Sonu Nigam Loses His Hair & Voice Over Azaan
Did Sonu Nigam know that one tweet could make him lose his sleep, his hair and his Twitter account?
“God bless everyone. I’m not a Muslim and I have to be woken up by the azaan in the morning. When will this forced religiousness end in India?”Sonu Nigam (via Twitter) on 16 April 2017
This azaan controversy haunted Sonu so much that he quit Twitter. But bechara aaj bhi apne baalon ko bhula nahi paya hai.
IFFI Controversy: I&B Ministry’s Interference
After the CBFC changed the title Sexy Durga to S Durga, the film got selected for the sarkari IFFI held in Goa. But the I&B Ministry stepped in to make sure that the “controversial” film wasn't screened at any cost.
So we now had the government censoring the CBFC!
Filmmaker Sanal Kumar Sasidharan got the Kerala High Court to back the screening of his film at IFFI. But even then the establishment ganged up to get S Durga's certificate revoked.
All the big players in Bollywood kept mum about this belligerent move by the state to gag expression, art and creativity.
Be it a biggie like Padmavati or an indie like S Durga, Bollywood has time and again made it clear that it is spineless when it comes to taking a stand for its own.
