Even before fans could get over the hangover of Marvel's Infinity Saga which culminated in this year’s mega blockbuster Avengers: Endgame, the studio has announced its new slate of films, dubbed Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The highlight of the announcements was the next Thor movie, titled Thor: Love and Thunder, featuring Chris Hemsworth, Tessa Thompson and Natalie Portman.

The sequel, to be directed by Thor: Ragnarok helmer Taika Waiti, was announced during Marvel Studios’ panel at the ongoing San Diego Comic-Con.

The news came as a surprise since fans were uncertain about the future of Hemsworth's Asgardian God of Thunder in the MCU post the events of Endgame. The bigger surprise, however, was the return of Portman. Her character Jane Foster wasn’t part of Ragnarok, and many assumed audiences had seen the last of her in the MCU.

Waititi also announced that Portman's Jane Foster will adapt a version of the Lady Thor arc that was recently seen in Marvel Comics. You heard that right, we’re going to have a female Thor! Natalie ran out on stage to thunderous applause and accepted the hammer from a kneeling Taika.

“That story line is incredible is full emotion, love and thunder and introduces for the first time female Thor,”
Taika Waititi

Tessa alluded to her character identifying as LGBTQ, and promised more on that front in Love and Thunder.

Thor: Love and Thunder is set to release in theatres on 5 November, 2021.
