The Black Prince, unveiled a few days back in Cannes, tells the poignant tale of Maharaja Duleep Singh, the last king of Punjab and the Koh-i-Noor's last Indian owner. Starring Punjabi singer Satinder Sartaaj and Shabana Azmi among others, the film is written and directed by Kavi Raz and explores the life and legacy of the king - known as the ‘Black Prince’ - his relationship with Queen Victoria, and the return to his roots.

Set against a lavish backdrop, The Black Prince seeks to recreate a nearly forgotten slice of history. Sartaaj breathes fire into his role as Maharaja Duleep Singh, while Shabana Azmi as the simmering Rani Jindan is precise.
It’s interesting that two productions dealing with two Indian men in Queen Victoria’s life are being released around the same time - the other being Victoria & Abdul starring Dame Judi Dench and Ali Faizal.
The Black Prince releases on 19 May.
