After years of talk about this film and many writers having come and gone, Disney’s Cruella may finally have found its feet. The evil but beautifully crafted character from 101 Dalmatians, Cruella de Vil will be the protagonist of the film, and the story would be told from her point of view. Oscar-winning actor, Emma Stone would be donning the role. What’s more, I,Tonya director Craig Gillespie is in talks to helm the project.
The studio is running through their library of animated properties to present "new" tellings in the live-action setting. Many writers were hired for Cruella on the course of its development. Alina Brosh McKenna, the mastermind behind The Devil Wears Prada, was first hired as the screenwriter for this project. However, after two years, Kelly Marcel, who wrote Fifty Shades of Grey, took over. Then, Jez Butterworth (Edge of Tomorrow) rewrote the script a few years back.
According to Deadline, Craig Gillespie is in talks to direct Cruella for Disney, which wants to begin pre-production quickly.
And if you haven’t yet watched the 1996 version, starring the divine Glenn Close (as Cruella), Jeff Daniels and Joely Richardson, you need to do so right now.
