Walt Disney Studios has shared the first look from the upcoming remake of the popular 1992 animated film Aladdin. The new avatar, directed by Guy Ritchie (Sherlock Holmes; Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels), will be a live action musical.
The brief teaser pans across the fictional city of Agrabah. A parrot—presumably the evil sorcerer Jafar’s companion Iago—soars above and the entrance to the Cave of Wonders is revealed.
“Only one may enter here…one whose worth lies far within…the diamond in the rough,” says an ominous voice as we’re given our first glimpse of the cave’s interiors, glittering with treasure. The trailer closes with Aladdin reaching out to grab the magic lamp that will change his life.
The Disney remake stars Mena Massoud as Aladdin and Will Smith as Genie. You can expect to hear fresh arrangements of the original score, as well two new songs added to the mix.
Shortly before the teaser was released, Will Smith shared the poster on his Instagram, alluding to his character by saying “Lemme Out! Can’t wait for y’all (sic) to see me blue!”
The film releases on 24 May, 2019.
