‘Deadpool 2’ Critics’ Verdict: A Funnier & Sassier Follow-up

The sequel amps up the risqué humour and is chock-a-block with 80’s references.

Two years after surprising us with smutty meta humour, the Merc with a mouth is back with a bigger, smuttier follow up that, surprisingly, works despite being an obviously rushed up sequel. If you enjoyed the first Deadpool, prepare for a dose of the same formula on a slightly bigger and more explosive-y canvas but with just enough heart and genuine assiduity to keep you entertained. It is a rare sequel that is just as memorable as the first film and makes you look forward to more adventures with the charming foul mouthed asshat in red...Reynolds truly is to Deadpool what Robert Downey Jr is to Iron Man.

The only question is whether new director Leitch (Atomic Blonde) can pull off the Deadpool touch of 2016, with its risqué humour, incessant jokes and casual sex references, while taking forward a superhero franchise with a superhero who mocks everything about it. Leitch and Reynolds (who also contributes as writer) throw everything at it, and when we say everything, we mean all that comes waist down too. Let your imagination wander, and you may still come short.It is all too confusing in the beginning, and much too smart at times — again — for its own good. But as Reynolds gets other people to match his wits against, Deadpool 2 starts hitting the spots it wants too, much more effortlessly than its prequel.

Reynolds misses no opportunity to plug his country of origin, Canada, and apologise for the disastrous 2011 Green Lantern adaptation, in which he starred. At one point Wade snaps at Cable saying, “Zip it, Thanos”, referencing Brolin’s recent role in the blockbuster Avengers: Infinity War. There are many more such meta-moments, making this movie a fanboy’s playground (especially one of the scenes embedded in the end credits).

Audaciously crafted and cleverly written, Deadpool 2 has the ability to end the Avengers’ reign at the box office. Credit goes to the writers for ensuring that the constant wisecracks, digs at other superheroes or pop culture references, don’t distract a viewer from the story’s emotional core and it’s protagonist’s moral ambiguity.While the action is brilliantly shot and executed, the comedy smartly doubles up as a social commentary on racism, sexism, body shaming and sexual harassment.Boasting of some great unsuspecting cameos, the story humanises Deadpool, without letting go of what makes him different — deviant ways, indulgence in gory violence, sarcasm and narcissism. However, what stands out the most are the hilarious opening credits and post-credits scenes, perhaps the best in Marvel movie history.
