Music’s biggest night of the year has come and gone, but if you missed it, our best and worst highlights from the 58th Grammy Awards will bring you up to speed.
Best: Lady Gaga Saves the Night!
When Lady Gaga transformed into David Bowie to pay the grand man a tribute, it had to be EPIC! Bowie lost his battle to cancer last month, days after his 69th birthday and the release of his final album Blackstar. Lady Gaga nailed it in a way that’s definitive of the star performer that she is. The special effects, her spectacular costumes and a dramatic performance did justice to Bowie’s eclectic career.
Worst: Adele’s Performance Marred by Sound Issues
How can Adele go wrong with her notes, that too at the Grammys? Hell no! But what did go wrong with with her performance can be blamed on the sound guys. The star performer sounded a bit off and shrill at times as she sang All I Ask. Seems like she couldn’t hear herself and at one point she was positively yelling. Sound guys, if you are reading this, Adele fans are pissed. But, like Adele says, “Shit happens”.
Best: In Your Face Kanye West
A feud that refuses to die. Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech has Kanye West written all over it. As she took to stage after winning the ‘Album of the Year’, she made it very clear that Kanye West didn’t make her famous (as he previously suggested with dubious lyrics in his song Famous) and it was her own hard work. For those who are a little lost, here is how it all started:
- At the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards, where West stormed the stage, snatched the microphone from Swift, and proclaimed that Beyoncé should’ve won instead.
- This was followed by a recent Tidal-released album The Life of Pablo, in which Kanye West once again took a dig at Taylor Swift as he rapped these Famous lyrics- “For all my Southside niggas that know me best / I feel like me and Taylor might still have sex / Why? I made that bitch famous / God damn / I made that bitch famous,”.
Now that would piss anybody off. So Swift decided to give it back to Kanye as fiercely as she could, as she accepted her latest Grammy.
As the first woman to win Album of the Year at the Grammys twice, I wanna say to all the young women out there: there are going to be people along the way who will try to undercut your success, or take credit for your accomplishments or your fame, but if you just focus on the work and you don’t let those people sidetrack you, someday when you get where you’re going, you’ll look around and you’ll know that it was you and the people who love you that put you there, and that will be the greatest feeling in the worldTaylor Swift, Singer
Worst: Rihanna Was Missed Like Never Before
I want to blame the awards show’s unusually dull affair this year, that did nothing to make up for Rihanna’s resting vocal cords. She had to give the big night a skip as her doctor prescribed her some much needed rest. Her bronchitis kept her from the grand night. Rihanna was planning to groove it to Kiss It Better. Too bad, she was exactly what the show needed.
Best: When Taylor-Selena Gave us Major BFF Goals
And when your best friend is on stage accepting the biggest award of her life, this is what you do, CHEER! Selena Gomez was standing throughout the speech but the cutest moment was when she looked into the camera and said “That’s my best friend”. Who needs the boy friend when you have such girl friends!
Best & Worst: Kendrick’s Mind Blowing Performance & Him Losing ‘Album of the Year’
Kendrick Lamar won the audience with his powerful performance. He really made the 58th Grammy Awards worth waking up for. With 11 nominations in 9 categories, he took away 5 Grammys! Wow! But disappointment hit him hard when he lost to Taylor Swift in the ‘Album of the Year’ category. There’s always a next time Kendrick :)
Best: Meghan Trainor’s Teary ‘Thank You’
Meghan Trainor and her father couldn’t stop sobbing through the show with hapiness. She won her first Grammy as the ‘Best New Artist’ but sadly we could barely understand what she said between tears :P It was adorable to see her turn into a little girl, overwhelmed with emotion though. She said it herself, “I’m a mess”.
