2019 is set to see a spate of political biopics, most notably Thackeray and The Accidental Prime Minister. The latest to be announced is a film on incumbent Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who will be played by Vivek Anand Oberoi.
According to politician Omar Abdullah, Modi seems to have got the short end of the stick in the casting department when compared to his predecessor Manmohan Singh, who will be portrayed by Anupam Kher in The Accidental Prime Minister. The former Chief Minister of Jammu & Kashmir posted a snide tweet that read,
“Life is unfair Dr Manmohan Singh got someone of the calibre of Anupam Kher. Poor Modi ji has to settle for Vivek Oberoi. Salman Khan hota toh kya maza aata.”
The Modi biopic is being directed by Omung Kumar, whose credits include Mary Kom and Sarabjit, and produced by Suresh Oberoi and Sandip Ssingh. While it stars Vivek Oberoi in the lead, the rest of the cast is still to be announced.
The film’s poster was launched in 23 languages on 7 January by Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis.
