Veteran actor and theatre legend Dinyar Contractor, who has worked in films like Baadshah and Khiladi, passed away on the morning of 5 June in Mumbai. He was 79 years old. His last rites were performed later on Wednesday in Worli. According to family sources, the actor passed away due to old age related health issues.
Dinyar was best known for his comic roles in films. In 2019, he was also awarded the prestigious Padma Shri.
Dinyar started his career way back in 1966 when Mumbai Doordarshan had just launched the channel DD-2 and Dinyar got the opportunity to work in television programmes with Adi Marzban.
Later he created a mark for himself with films like Shah Rukh Khan’s Baazigar. Some of his more recent filmography includes Shahid Kapoor’s 36 China Town and Shirin Farhad Ki Toh Nikal Padi.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Wednesday, took to Twitter to mourn the death of Dinyar Contractor.
"Padma Shri Dinyar Contractor was special because he spread lots of happiness. His versatile acting brought smiles on several faces. Be it theatre, television or films, he excelled across all mediums. Saddened by his demise. My thoughts are with his family and admirers," PM Modi tweeted, while also sharing a photo of his meeting with the veteran actor.
Union minister Smriti Irani called Dinyar an actor "par excellence."
"He brought bursts of laughter with him wherever he went, he lit up the screen and our lives with his wit and charm. We will miss your presence Dinyar bhai. Rest in Peace Padma Shri Dinyar Contractor - theatre legend, actor par excellence," she tweeted.
