Rajinikanth's Petta, directed by Karthik Subbaraj, with music by Anirudh Ravichander is the first Rajini film – in 24 years – to release on Pongal. Touted to be ‘90's superstar flick’, the movie also stars Vijay Sethupathi, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Trisha, Simran and Bobby Simha in pivotal roles.

As has become customary, Rajini fans collected outside cinemas across the country on the morning of the release with cutouts, costumes, banners and all sorts of regalia to celebrate Petta. At IMAX Wadala in Mumbai, there were live bands playing music from Petta and fans of all ages wearing Rajini t-shirts dancing their hearts out. That too in the wee hours of the morning right before the first show of the film.

This day had the added blessing of being the festival of Pongal, and the fans made the traditional Pongal dish and performed puja right outside the theatres.
