Tahira Kashyap has been a source of inspiration ever since she opened up about her cancer diagnosis last September. She has chronicled her journey on social media, choosing to accept her battle with fierceness and grace.
In a recent interview with Film Companion, the writer and director spoke about how she came to terms with her illness and found the strength to fight back.
“I’m so glad for this obstacle because it has been such as lesson. It came at a time when I was very strong in faith - I’ve been practising Buddhism for two years. Nobody expects cancer to happen to them. That was the biggest shock, yes, but life is unpredictable and I accept that. You never know what will happen but you need to have an invincible human spirit. It is godlike. It gives you the will to endure and to revive. I feel you just need to be strong. My strength came from my practice, my faith, my family and myself.”Tahira Kashyap on fighting cancer
She also spoke about her relationship with husband Ayushmann Khurrana, whom she has known since college. Though the couple shares a strong bond, with Ayushmann often posting supportive messages for Tahira on social media, it was during Vicky Donor that their relationship was tested, she revealed.
“I was this crazy, insecure pregnant person when Vicky Donor happened. Both of us were immature. He didn’t have the maturity to hold my hand and tell me it’s okay, especially when I was crazy on hormones because I was pregnant at the time. I also didn’t have the maturity to take it easy. You also feel like a whale. Your husband is with beautiful women all around and you don’t come from that background. You understand art but you don’t have the maturity to deal with the frills that come along. I was very lost. But thankfully us knowing each other for 9-10 years before marriage really helped. Because I knew he was not a bad guy. That kind of sustained us and we made peace.Tahira Kashyap on her relationship with Ayushmann
On a lighter note Tahira shared her reaction when Ayushmann told her he wanted to become an actor.
“I literally scoffed. I ridiculed him. I was like ‘Shakal dekhi hai?’ I was very brutal. I wasn’t even shocked. I laughed. That’s the worse reaction to give to anybody!”Tahira Kashyap on Ayushmann becoming an actor
Tahira also divulged a few details about the film that she is currently working on.
“It’s a slice of life film. It’s a film which is very close to my heart. It’s about women — I love women; I’m obsessed with them. We have five women in different age brackets. We start off with a 15-year-old and go up to a 45-year-old and even a 60-year-old. It’s about the quirky issues that they have in their lives. It’s going to be a nice, fun film.Tahira Kashyap on her upcoming film
