Sunny Pawar, who belongs to a slum in Santacruz, Mumbai has made his way into the hearts of millions with his performance in Oscar-nominated, Lion. Not only that, the little star also got his Lion King moment at the 89th Academy Awards when the host, Jimmy Kimmel lifted him up in the air.

His proud mother, Vasu spoke to Mid-day about the 8-year old’s success,

The world might say he is a celebrity, but for me, he is my baby. Our phones haven’t stopped ringing since morning. I am missing him more today. He sounded overwhelmed when we last spoke. I think he’s beginning to get homesick.

Sunny is accompanied by his father, Dilip Pawar for the film’s promotions around US.

But his mother has yet to watch her son on the small screen. While the world watched the Oscars LIVE, Sunny’s mother couldn’t do so. All because of a faulty cable connections.

I spoke to Sunny in the morning briefly, before he went for the awards. He didn’t sound nervous. His father told me which channel to watch it on, but I missed it due to the faulty cable connection. We live in a joint family, so we will sit together and watch the awards function again, hopefully soon.

The family hasn’t watched Lion yet, but Vasu says the producers are going to arrange for a premiere of the film in the US for the entire family.

She also spoke about their aspirations for Sunny to act in Bollywood.

Everyone has told me he is a great actor. His father didn’t want him to do just anything that came his way. [But] He really believed in the story [of Lion]. Sunny was always a movie buff; Singham and Krrish are his favourites.
