Sonu Nigam is quitting Twitter and he has shared the news on the social media platform in a series of tweets, which would disappear as soon as he deactivates his account. The singer says that Twitter is a great platform but has become a place where everyone expresses their anger instead of discussing issues. He is all for a “balanced” approach, he says.

Check out his tweets here:

What is disturbing is that through this approach, Nigam has found a way to support what Paresh Rawal and singer Abhijit Bhattacharya have said in their now infamous tweets.

Nigam says he is neither left nor right wing, nor does he uphold any particular religion. But he doesn’t want to be in a place where “venom” is spewed with “relish”.

Nigam has, howevere, put in a disclaimer saying he might return to Twitter in the future - “never say never”, he says - and that if a new platform “with some filter” emerges, he would be totally owning it.

Shehla Rashid Responds

The controversy started with Bhattacharya quote-tweeting student activist Shehla Rashid’s tweet in which she shared a Hindustan Times article on the alleged involvement of BJP men in a sex racket.

Rashid responded on 24 May to the controversy and slammed both Abhijeet and Sonu Nigam as well as their supporters.
