Priyanka Chopra has terminated her contract with jewellery brand Nirav Modi, her spokesperson said, in light of the recent allegations of a Rs 11,400 crore scam that has been levelled against him by Punjab National Bank.
Soon after news of the scam broke, it was reported that the actress, who appears in some of Modi’s jewellery ads, had sued him over the non-payment of her fees. Later, it was reported that she was seeking legal opinion with respect to terminating her contract with the brand.
In 2017, Priyanka Chopra came on board as the global ambassador for a diamond campaign along with actor Sidharth Malhotra.
Malhotra had also reportedly announced his intention to disassociate with the brand till the charges against it are proved wrong.
Well-known in the entertainment industry as well as business circles, the 47-year-old businessman has frequently appeared in international fashion magazines with pictures from his high-street stores.
After the alleged scam was uncovered, his connections with many B-towners like Sonam Kapoor, Nimrat Kaur, Kareena Kapoor and Shilpa Shetty have been revealed. Kaur is known to have launched one of his stores, while many others have worn his collection. Even Hollywood biggies like Kate Winslet have walked the ramp adorned in his jewels. Most of the celebrities are now eager to disaffiliate with him.
A case under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) has been filed against Nirav Modi by the ED.
