In an interview with Anne Fulewider, Quantico star - Priyanka Chopra - was asked about her take on the entire Harvey Weinstein scandal and whether characters like Weinstein existed in India. To this, Chopra replied by saying that Weinsteins are “everywhere”.

She followed this up by saying that the greater problem goes beyond the current events and the scandal following. To her, it is a manifestation of the power struggle that men face with strong, independent and ambitious women.

There is not just ‘a Harvey Weinstein’ in Hollywood, there are many. It happens everywhere.

Hollywood big-shot, Harvey Weinstein was recently booked with charges of sexual assault and harassment, an event which when reached the media - encouraged scores of women who had been victim to Weinstein’s advances - to speak up against him. After a series of interpersonal events and charges, Weinstein was finally expelled from the Academy of Motion Picture, which was followed by his formal resignation from the board of the Weinstein Company as well.

It’s not just about sexuality. It’s not about sex. It’s about power. It’s an isolating feeling. The easiest thing to take away from a woman is her work.

The Quantico star also spoke about the gender disparity which exists within the industry (and elsewhere) and about how as a woman, there is always that naysaying threat that the ‘big boys’ club will get together and ‘boycott’ her. As a result, it is imperative that women remain resilient, unapologetic and hard-working.

At the same time, she added, they also needed to be defiant to an extent, so no one could tell them how to dress, act, behave or anything that stops a woman from being her best.

Don’t allow anyone to tell you that you need to dress a certain way. When you open your mouth, you deliver.

The actor is among the many women who have opened about the much overlooked existence of sexual harassment within the entertainment industry. Others who have spoken out recently about the same are Angelina Jolie, Gwyneth Paltrow and Jennifer Lawrence.
