In this webisode of Calling Karan, love guru Karan Johar waxes eloquent about the three letter word that can destroy relationships - EGO. He implores his callers to be the bigger person and underscores the damaging effects of an inflated ego.
“Skip the E and let it Go.”Karan Johar
We have our own image in our minds. When there is a distance between the image and the reality or when we are proved wrong in front of everyone else, our ego is hurt. Johar urges his callers to make their egos flexible but to hold on to their self-respect.
“We give ourselves too much importance. Nothing is bigger than your work. Ego is the most unproductive emotion you can ever find. If ego is disturbing the equation of your relationship, you need to call me.”Karan Johar
He goes on to cite an example from the film industry in this regard where people who want to meet him for work say, “I can’t come to your office. You come to mine.” Johar goes on to say that as long as the work is done, he doesn’t mind meeting people anywhere - even in a coffee shop.
Johar even elaborates on the differences between ego and self-esteem. An egotistic person is driven primarily by feedback from others. While the ones with high self esteem are driven by internal factors such as passion, belief or personal vision. Ego harbours insecurity and self-esteem begets confidence.
He speaks to callers about how, if they are playing the blame-game, ego exists in their relationship.
The surprise caller on this webisode is Aadar Jain. Karan Johar advises him against juggling two women. He says that if you’re playing the field, even the girls are aware of it. Juggling two women at the same time is a sign of the ‘stupid ego’. “Commit to one or have with all. Don’t juggle two commitments,” exhorts Johar.
In the reverse rapid fire round Karan Johar admits that he does not like his ego being fanned. He says, “I like to be told what’s not good about me.”
Towards the end, Johar gets candid and reveals, “There’s nobody in Bollywood who does not have an ego and they even have ego’s best friend - delusion.”
