Celebrities are losing followers on Twitter and rapidly so! Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan's follower count on Twitter dropped by over 4,24,000, while Shah Rukh Khan's followers dropped by over 362,141 and Salman Khan has 3,40,884 followers less. This is the result of a 'sanitisation' exercise by the micro-blogging platform.
With this dip in follower count, Big B now has about 1.7 million less followers than SRK.
Twitter decided to sanitise the platform by removing inactive and locked accounts. So, a lot of celebrities from the film industry ended up with a drastic cut in their follower base.
Bachchan, who is usually extremely active on Twitter, has been silent on his sudden loss of followers, reports News18.
Earlier this year, Bachchan had called out the platform for “deliberately” not increasing his follower count, despite "maximum activity” on each of his posts. When he lost 1.6 lakh followers in January, he even threatened to leave the platform.
SocialBlade.com, a social media tracking website, shows that Big B lost around 424,008 followers in just 24 hours.
According to the website, actor Aamir Khan lost 316,900-plus followers, while Priyanka Chopra lost 354,830 followers and Deepika Padukone lost 288,298.
The micro-blogging platform was yet to come up with an official statement on this.
Earlier this week, Twitter had announced that it would remove locked accounts – that are disabled owing to suspicious activity – from follower counts across profiles globally. The locked accounts are different from spam or bot accounts and, in most cases, these accounts were created by real people.
The move is likely to affect high-profile users the most.
A few celebrities like Onir and Apurva Asrani reacted on losing followers overnight.
