Captain Marvel has maintained a strong foothold in its second week at the box office. Despite mixed reviews, the Brie Larson film has earned Rs 70 crore in India.

A female superhero, a woman director, an origin story in reverse and Nick Fury in a younger avatar - multiple firsts have given Captain Marvel a double-digit opening at the box-office in India.

Directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, Captain Marvel has Oscar-winning actor Brie Larson performing gravity defying stunts in her role as an Air Force pilot Carol Danvers, who becomes Captain Marvel after the Earth is caught in the midst of a galactic conflict between alien worlds.

The origin story has been presented in reverse and has already set cash registers ringing. "We got excited about introducing this superhero in a different way and kind of introducing her as someone who is already superpowered. When you meet her, she is a space warrior, she can do proton blasts from wrists... What she does not know is her history and how she became who she is. Over the course of the film, we kind of unpack with her, and go on this journey of self-discovery with her. It's like an origin story in reverse," says Boden, who is the first female director of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
