The glitz, the glamour and the red carpet. The Cannes 2016 film festival came to an end on 22 May 2016 with the presentation of this year’s awards. Here is a list of the winners.
Palme d’Or (Best Film)
The award went to ‘I, Daniel Blake’, directed by Ken
Loach (Britain). Watch the trailer of the winning film here. This is the 13th time that Loach, a social campaigner for most of his career and the director of more than 50 movies, has entered the Cannes with his film.
Grand Prix
‘Juste la Fin du Monde’ (It’s Just the End of the World), directed by Xavier Dolan (Canada) won the Grand Prix.
The film is based on a play by Jean-Luc Lagarce about a man who returns home after a long absence, only to tell his family that he is about to die. Dolan surprised critics and won the award, watch the trailer here.
Jury Prize
The award went to ‘American Honey’, directed by Andrea Arnold (Britain). According to IMBD, the film is about a teenage girl with nothing to lose, who joins a traveling magazine sales crew, and gets caught up in a whirlwind of hard partying, law bending and young love as she criss-crosses the Midwest with a band of misfits. The movie stars Sasha Lane and Shia LaBeouf.
Best Director
Two directors won in this category. Cristian Mungiu (Romania) won for ‘Bacalaureat’ (Graduation).
Olivier Assayas (France) bagged the shared award for the Kristen Stewart starrer ‘Personal Shopper’.
Best Screenplay
Asghar Farhadi (Iran) won the award for ‘Forushande’ (The
Salesman). The movie is about a couple whose relationship begins to turn sour during their performance of Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman.
Best Actress
Jaclyn Jose (Philippines) bagged the award for Best Actress for her role in Brillante
Mendoza’s ‘Ma’ Rosa.’
Best Actor
Shahab Hosseini (Iran) won the award for Asghar Farhadi’s ‘Forushande’ (The Salesman), which also won Best Screenplay.
