Aanand L Rai’s Zero, starring Shah Rukh Khan, Anushka Sharma and Katrina Kaif, made a poor start on its opening weekend, earning just Rs 59.07 crore in the box office according to trade analyst Taran Adarsh. He speculated that Christmas day might see a spike in numbers though he maintained that overall Zero has “clearly underperformed”. The film did in fact gather momentum on Day 5.
Released on 21 December, Zero revolves around the love story of a vertically challenged man Bauua Singh, a scientist with CP Aafia and a toubled movie star Babita Kumari. The film also boasts several starry cameos including the late Sridevi and Salman Khan.
While Zero has got mixed reviews, the performances of SRK, Anushka and Katrina are being praised. It remains to be seen whether SRK’s magic translates into healthy box office numbers.
Earlier, Adarsh said the film “slipped” on Day 2 and earned Rs 38.36 crore in two days.
The film underperformed on day 1 despite the festive season and massive release, raking in Rs 20.14 crore in India. According to Taran Adarsh, the business over the weekend would prove to be extremely crucial for the film.
Zero has released on 5,965 screens worldwide, 4,380 of them being in India.
